The figures above indicate typical figures. Statistics published by the Health and Safety Executive show that work related musculoskeletal disorders account for serious health problems amongst those at work. In an average year there is:
- 7.3 million days lost to injury due to these disorders
- 553,000 cases of musculoskeletal disorders
- Higher rates of disorders for people over the age of 45
- Higher rates in building trade, nurses, agriculture, courier and postal workers
- An equal split between back disorders and upper limb disorders
- Over five billion pounds cost to the nation
- Compensation costs for back injuries can be as much as £160,000
