A recap of the basics for safe manual handling

We can recap the components of a safe manual handling lift as follows:

  • Plan the task
  • Plan the way you are going to lift it
  • Have correct foot position
  • Keep arms as close to the body as possible
  • Face in the direction of travel
  • Keep you back "straight"
  • Have the correct, palm, grip
  • Lift your head up
  • Lift using your leg muscles
  • Tense neck if necessary for heavy loads
  • Try to avoid twisting
