The effects of reaching out on the body

Reaching out reduces your lifting capacity

The generally accepted performance loss for a person when reaching out or lifting above head heights is:

  • Anything above the shoulders reduces human capacity by a half
  • At full arms stretch, about four fifths capacity reduction
  • At half arms stretch, about one third capacity reduction

Note: When I was conducting these courses I would pick on someone who looked strong and give them my briefcase to hold by their sides. I would then offer them ten pounds if they could hold it at full arm's length for two minutes. I never lost the tenner!
