As mentioned previously, twisting during a manual handling task will produced further stresses on the human body and the approximate capacity reduction is:
- Thirty degree twist = ten per cent reduction in capacity
- Forty five degree twist = fifteen per cent reduction
- Ninety degree twist = twenty per cent reduction
When considering these figures it's worth bearing in mind that a worker may be doing several things wrong at once such as reaching out, twisting and stooping. The effect of the human body would then be quite considerable and the task would have to be subject to a risk assessment.
