The EC Framework Directive

Where the manual handling regulations came from

Before we had the EU, we had the EC and in 1992 they produced the European Community Framework Directive. This directive told governments what to do to improve safety in many areas of the workplace but it was left up to individual governments to decide how to implement the directive.

The British government was one of the first to obey our EC masters and they produced the following regulations:

  • Management of health and safety at work regulations
  • Workplace (health, safety and welfare) regulations
  • Provision and use of work equipment regulations
  • Manual handling regulations
  • Display screen equipment regulations
  • Personal protective equipment regulations

These became affectionately known as the six pack regulations for obvious reasons. Significantly, many other countries in the then EC ignored the directive and some still do.

It can be seen from the above that the Manual Handling Regulations are the subject of this training course and occasionally the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations apply.
